Set List 05.24.09

Here is the music that we used on 05.24.09 - Week 3 of "The Core"

[Opening Song]
Bless The Lord - Jeff Deyo

[Music Set]
Forever - Chris Tomlin
Glory Revealed - Candi Pearson Shelton
I Stand Amazed - Candi Pearson Shelton Version

[Closing Song]

We had a small crowd today (that will probably be the norm for the summer) but man the worship was awesome. My wife, Lori, did a fantastic job on Glory Revealed (even with a sore throat) and Priscila did a great job on I Stand Amazed.

Looking forward to this weekend when we'll be going back to do some more work on the Acts 11:29 Project. Make sure you let me, Jamie, or Lori (loribeaty@gmail.com) know if you want to help us out. We need about 6 people.

As always, part of Fred McKinnon's Sunday Set Lists.

Life Change...

This weekend I witnessed something that was life changing. I had the opportunity to go to Anderson, SC on Saturday night and be a part of Newspring Church's baptism tailgate party.
Now if you are a little confused, let me fill you in. A couple of years ago, Newspring decided that they would do a big baptism service for their church and basically throw a big party in the process. Their thought process being - if we can get excited and party like crazy for a college football game, why can't we do it for a baptism service too. Sounds good to me. Well they have done it a few times now over the past couple years and it is awesome.

They had 4 above ground pools with two pastors in each pool. They had people grilling out, throwing the football, playing music, etc. If I didn't know better, I would have thought that I was going to a Clemson or Carolina football game.

And then at some point during the baptisms I had a thought. How cool would it be for FBC to do this same thing with an above ground pool or two and a big tailgate party on the edge of our property looking out over Dave Lyle Blvd for all of Rock Hill to see. I don't know, it could happen...it's all about life change.

But what I really want to tell you about is the reason that Lori and I went to Anderson. Don't get me wrong I was super excited to be a part of over 400 baptisms in that parking lot. Not to mention the 150 at the Greenville campus and the 12 at the Florence campus. But I was much more interested in one baptism in particular.

Back in March, my father had a life changing experience. God gave him a message and he listened. Next, he sought counsel and eventually decided that he needed to proceed in believer's baptism (He was baptized as an infant and accepted Christ as a teenager). I had the honor of witnessing my father be obedient to our Father in heaven. My brother had the unique honor of being able to perform my father's baptism. As you can guess emotions ran high and tears ran freely.
Dad, I want you to know that I am proud of you for following God's plan even when it wasn't easy. I love you, I'm proud of you, and I am excited for what the future holds...
To all parents out there. Do not underestimate the power of your children seeing you obeying your Father in heaven. It is vital to their growth and understanding as a Christian. Talk with them, help them to understand. It WILL make a difference in their life.

Acts 11:29 Project

Hey Reveal...

Just wanted to give you an update on what happened on our first Project 11:29 outing this past weekend. On Friday, 4 of us went to Tommy's place and looked over the work that needed to be done. We also pressure washed the trailer and did some minor yard work like raking leaves.

On Saturday, several of us got there at 7:30 and began to remove some of the old siding that had rotted. This turned out to be a bigger job than we had at first anticipated. About 8:45 reinforcements arrived and they began to paint. We got about 3/4 of the trailer painted when it started to rain. Needless to say, water based paint and rain mix way too well.

We did manage to get three pieces of siding replaced and the window (that we removed) put back in place.

So here's the deal...on May 29th and/or 30th - We need several people to help us finish removing and replacing the bad siding. We will also be applying some caulk and primer to the new siding. We probably need about 3 people who have some demolition/carpentry experience (Will, Edward, Dale, Dale's Dad?) and about 3 people who would be willing to help (no experience necessary). If you are willing, leave a comment and let us know.

Then on our regularly scheduled meeting of June 20th, we will go back and re-paint and/or finish painting.

I am really looking forward to doing this project. It was a lot of fun to get to know some people better. And even though it rained and we got soaked, we did get a good bit accomplished and started building a relationship with Tommy. If you are looking for a way to get involved here at FBC, Project 11:29 is for you. Looking forward to the 30th.

Set List 05.17.09

Here is the music that we used for 05.17.09 - Week 2 of the series "The Core". Steve Hogg's son got married yesterday and he didn't want to preach all three services. This gave us a chance to try something a little different for worship. We created three videos using quotes on love from songs, movies and people and played them in three different ways.

[Intro]
Our Love Is Loud - David Crowder

In this first video, we took some of the quotes about love and recorded several people on our team saying them. We then played the audio over some guitar music with a cool moving background.

[Welcome]

[Worship Set]
Glorious One - Steve Fee
Be Glorified - Chris Tomlin
This is the first time that we have done this one. I have been a bit nostalgic recently towards songs and am trying to bring back some older songs that have/had a lot of meaning. Even though it was the first time for this song, I think that it went over great.

In the second video, we just had several quotes up on the screen. This gave the audience a chance to reflect on them. We finished up with a quote from Forrest Gump "I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is." That one got a chuckle from the crowd.

[Song]
I've Always Loved You - Third Day
Once again, this was a "new" song for our congregation and I felt that it went over great. Looking forward to bringing this one back.

[Message Part 1]
For the message today, we used a movie from "Modern Parables". We used the movie part as "Part 1" of the message. This one is on the Good Samaritan. Modern Parables is a modern-day reenactment of the parables of Jesus.

[Offering]
Love Song - Third Day
We normally do the offering at the end of the service and just allow people to place it in the plate as they leave, but I wanted to switch it up some today. I pointed out that giving one's offering is not just a commandment from God, but it is a act of worship. Today, we had the baskets up front on little tables and had people come up and place their offering in the baskets.
We also displayed several scripture verses on the screens for people to reflect on during the song.

[Message Part 2]
For "Part 2" of the message, we played the application portion of the Modern Parables. Rev. Jeff Schulte did an excellent job opening up the Good Samaratian parable.

[Closing Song]
Your Love Is Extravagant - Darrell Evans

Today was awesome. It was by far the best all around service that we have had at Reveal. Now that is not to say that everything went smooth because it didn't. I had broken a string (G) during the first service (10:30). Unfortunately, I didn't have any more strings, which is a problem when you have to lead another service in an hour. So I sent one of our tech guys to Target and he brought me back some strings. Now these were not the best quality strings, or the ones that I would have normally chosen, but beggars can't be choosers, right. So I replaced my string and played the first song when, yep you guessed it, I broke another one (B). When I broke the string, I pulled it out of the top tunning peg and figured that the bottom peg would still be in the guitar, but when I went out to change it during "Part 1" of the message, I realized I didn't have it, so I had to go back in and search around on the stage in the dark for a black peg. Luckily I found it and was able to re-string my guitar and re-tune for the offering song.

I was also crazy sick with head cold thing. I could barely hear or talk, but somehow, God gave me the strength to lead worship. I don't know if anyone else was feeling the worship today like this, maybe it was just me, but if so, man I worshiped today with all that I had. IT WAS AWESOME!

As always, check out how other churches worshiped this morning at Fred McKinnon's Sunday Set Lists.

Set List 05.10.09

Here is the music that we used for Mother's Day - 05.10.09. This was the first week of our new series "The Core" based out of Romans 12:9-21.

[Intro]
Give A Little Bit - Supertramp (Goo Goo Dolls Version)

Dorky Mother's Day Gifts - (This was a collection of 1950's commercials depicting housewives with cars, dishwashers, etc.)

[Welcome]
Jamie Burdette

[Mother's Day Recognition]
Our tradition at FBC is to give all the mother's carnations. Everyone in the audience who has their mother present comes up to the front, gets a carnation and gives it to their mother.

[Worship Set]
Let God Arise - Chris Tomlin
All We Need - Charlie Hall
Madly - Steve Fee

[Sermon]
The Core (1) - Steve Hogg

[Closing Song]
Hallelujah (Your Love Is Amazing) - Brenton Brown

This weekend we had a lower than normal attendance. I guess Winthrop University being out and being Mother's Day caused many of our regulars to be somewhere else. I was also dealing with some family stuff that caused my mind to be somewhere else. I thought I was doing ok with it, but I had one person in the band and one of our pastors ask me if I was ok, so I guess that I didn't do a great job of hiding it. I guess we can't be on top of our game every week.

This Saturday we are doing our first "Project 11:29" event. This is based on
"The disciples, each according to his ability, decided to provide help for the brothers living in Judea." - Acts 11:29 (NIV)
This arose out of a desire to give back. As a younger group, we don't have a lot of resources to give, but what we do have is time and talents. So we are looking for projects that we can do/help with that will allow us to give back.

As always, check out what other churches are doing for worship at Fred McKinnon's Sunday Setlists.

Star Wars Day

I'm a day late getting to this but I thought I would let you know that I found out yesterday was Star Wars Day. I was on twitter.com and saw searches for #starwarsday topped the searches list. Being a Star Wars fan (I was 9 when the first movie was released) I decided to check it out.

I wondered if May 4 was the date of an important release of one of the movies. It wasn't (although all six movies were released in May). Maybe George Lucas was born on May 4. No, he was born on May 14. A main actor's birthday? No. Then I realized that Star Wars Day occurs on May 4 so that you can take the opportunity to say to someone on that day, "May the 4th be with you," a play on the May the Force be with you quote from the movie.

Is that cheesy? Oh, yeah. Does it give those of us who love Star Wars (it stands alone atop my list of favorite movies) to quote favorite lines from the movie ('Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi. You're my only hope')? Definitely. It also helps get me in the mood for my second favorite internet-inspired holiday - Talk Like A Pirate Day on May 19.

I hope you have a great Cinco de mayo!

Ways to Celebrate Star Wars Day (from Star Wars:Blogs):
1. Watch Star Wars. Any one or all six will make for a great Star Wars Day!

2. Tell some one that, "the Force will be with you...always."

3. Become a Jedi, like your father before you.

4. Use at least 3 quotes form the saga in your daily routine. For example, "I have a bad feeling about this" or, "Laugh it up, Fuzzball" or, "Impressive, most impressive."

5. Do or do not. There is no try.

6. Destroy a Death Star.

7. Use the Force to open the door at the grocery store.

8. Hold a toy Lightsaber duel with someone.

9. Give birth to twins and name them Luke and Leia.

10.
Let the Wookie win.

Set List 05.03.09

Here is the music that we used for 05.03.09 - The Amazing Chase - Week 3. This week Jamie spoke on "Chasing Life". His sermon was based in John 10:10
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." - John 10:10 (NIV)
[Opening Song]
Worship You Forever - Todd Fields

[Welcome]

[Message]
"Chasing Life" - Jamie Burdette

[Worship Set]
Rescue - Jared Anderson (Desperation Band Version)
King of Glory - Third Day
A Love Song - Stellar Kart
Everyday - Joel Houston (Lincoln Brewster Version)

We switched up the order of the service today to do the sermon at the top and the worship set at the end. It was great to be able to allow the congregation to respond after the sermon. We also had lunch as a group today. It is really nice to be able to chat with people after the service. So many times, people run out after the service and I don't get a chance to speak to many of them.

Next week, Steve Hogg is back on the mic kicking off our new series "The Core" based in Romans 12.

Kristian Stanfill - Attention

I was fortunate enough to be in Atlanta when Kristian Stanfill led worship at a city-wide young adult gathering. It was right after "Beautiful Jesus" had hit the airwaves and become popular. Being a part of that gathering piqued my interest in his music. His new CD came out last week. Enjoy listening to it via www.lala.com.

Wrapping up The Chase

As we wrap up The Chase series, we will be looking at one of my favorite Bible verses – John 10:10 – and the life that Jesus desires for all of his followers to experience. Jesus took on flesh not just to save us from eternal condemnation but to bring us the freedom to experience live to its fullest. One of the first Christians – Irenaeus understood this. He is famously quoted as saying:
“The glory of God is man fully alive.”
This week at Reveal, we will look at what it means to experience life to the fullest.

I hope that you have been challenged and encouraged during “The Amazing Chase.” Challenged to move beyond the status quo, to move away from the safety of your home base and encouraged to know that the Lord is in the chase with you, that He has dreams for you that are bigger than anything you could dream for yourself!

Hope to see you Sunday!!!

-- Peace, Jamie
